C’est la première d’une série d’œuvres que Marcelin rédige lors de son second exil à Paris après la chute de Nord Alexis en 1908. Elle paraît en 1909 et comporte des narrations tirées de faits véridiques, des portraits de personnages de la vie locale : paysans, chefs de section, chefs d’Etat, parlementaires, journalistes, généraux, jeunes gens des classes moyennes, prêtres, rapatriés aux idées « exotiques » avec ou sans épouse étrangère… Ces textes méritent de servir de modèles de narration, de description, de portraits dans nos salles de classes.
